Essential top tips for rainy days on holiday

Blog Pic In the UK it rains. There is no getting away from this fact. If we stayed indoors every time rain was forecast, we wouldn't leave the house for months, let alone go camping.

So what is the number one answer to bad weather preparation? Well we believe it comes down to attitude.

Closely followed by wellies, waterproofs, back up plan, pub and umbrella!

Here are some Campingninja tips to help you on your way.
  • Check the weather forecast before you leave. Obvious but often overlooked.
  • Pack necessary waterproofs and wellies.
  • Invest in some large plastic boxes. £6-10 Perfect for camping and all your food and utensils will remain dry whatever happens.
  • Pack extra towels. They will come in handy, as the ones you have may not dry quick enough. Pack an old one for drying the inside of the tent floor should things get bad.
  • Research the area before departure. Look on the campsite's page and find out what they talk about within walking distance and nearby.
  • Look up local swimming pools if you have kids. Great way to spend half a day. A waterpark would be even better - if you're already wet it doesn't matter if its raining!
  • Try a local Cinema.
  • Play the Brown Sign Lottery. Visit the tourist attraction at the end of every 3rd Brown Tourist Sign. The Campingninja team have ended up at a Tank Museum, Brewery and Cotton Mill. All highly recommended!
  • If National Trust houses are your thing then brilliant - there is bound to be one nearby - find a National Trust Property here.
  • Jump on a local bus or train and explore a new town. Cream teas are a must and we guarantee you’ll have fun.
  • Get to know your local pub obviously but they only open at 11am. Plan a circular walk between 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 country pubs. If you are going to get wet, who cares when you are aiming for a pub. Life needs a little direction.
  • Take an extra ground sheet to help out under the tent or at the entrances of your tent.
  • Hit the beach and go for a swim. Can't get any wetter than that. Get hold of a wetsuit to stay a bit warmer and play in the sea for hours.
  • Try a new water-sport. Loads of places offer taster and beginner sessions for activities like surfing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing.
  • Explore a local museum. Always interestingly quirky.
Above all it all come down to attitude. It always seems to rain from Friday to Monday but with a little planning and a sense of adventure camping trips needn't be a nightmare.
